Fading Voices of Hakka In Hong Kong
OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this group project is to raise awareness of the decreasing vitality of Hakka, which used to be the second most dominant language in Hong Kong, in terms of its changing linguistic environment.
In addition to the literature research and analysis at the macro level, this project pays more attention to the phenomenon at the micro level, that is, feelings and reflections from individual's perspective.
For one thing, we would like to explore the language shift from Hakka to Cantonese between generations. We are interested in the specific reasons for different individuals' acquisitions of the dominant language and decreasing use of Hakka, together with their feelings about it.
For another, when studying the linguistic environmental changes, we focus more on personal perceptions of it and the possible impact on their Hakka identity and social status.
